Nadine Lewis was born and raised in Gotham. She is the daughter of Jason and Marie Lewis. Marie was a stay-at-home mom with hopes of becoming a nurse. Jason was an accomplished lawyer, a defense attorney who made a lot of money being hired by the lower levels of mob families. He was never employed by the upper tiers, so there was nothing that forced him to stay in Gotham, but he was connected enough to have plenty of money.

The family relocated to Florida when Nadine was eighteen, where Nadine spent six years attending the school and the law school. There, Nadine was fairly active, generally well-liked among her peers, and most of her teachers had nothing but praise about her abilities.

However, her fourth and final year in undergraduate studies showed a very different Nadine to one person. His name was Andrew Long, and he was a professor at the college. He graded Nadine's final paper the first semester with a C, which she felt was an injustice. She keyed his car, scratching 'Burn in Hell' on the driver's side door, and proceeded to stalk him for two years. He tried to have her charged, but the police shrugged him off, certain it was not serious, even though he reported her sitting on his porch with a handgun several times.

He moved, and Nadine finished school without incident. She decided to move back to Gotham while her parents stayed in Florida.

Things get damaged / Things get broken

She came to work for the District Attorney of Gotham, Harvey Dent. She came off as naive, but she proved herself to be hard-working and a valuable member of his team.

Nadine also attracted the attention of Dr. Jonathan Crane. She was warned of his psychopathic tendencies too late and, when she attempted to get out of a "therapy" session, fear gas was sent to her home.

Infuriated and determined not to be made a fool of, Nadine's obsessive personality resurfaced. She researched Crane, reading everything she could find on him, studying his movements just as he studied hers. She became a stalker of her stalker.

She grew bold, taunting him, daring him, and he struck. First, it was through Victor Szaz, a former patient. Crane seemingly rescued her from the man, and she was taken to an undisclosed location... where Crane proceeded to inflict his mental torture on her. Crane prolonged the agony by stopping it at times, speaking softly to her, almost nursing her, before once again turning her world into a living nightmare.

This treatment left a deep, probably permanent scar on Nadine's psyche. She was rescued, after ten days, by Detective Stephens of the Gotham Police Department, but the damage was done. She continued to work for the DA, struggling as she realized that her control over her impulses was practically nonexistent.

As for Crane, his actions made two very deep impressions on Nadine. Her attitude toward him is almost that of two different personalities, but it is not quite split. She sees "Jonathan" and "Scarecrow" as two different people, Jonathan as a man she is in love with and Scarecrow as the frightening tormentor that she desires to save Jonathan from.

She continued working for Harvey Dent until he was, supposedly, killed. The accepted story, given by Commissioner Gordon, was that Harvey Dent had died of complications from the explosion of the warehouse and being moved after the destruction of Gotham General. Nadine Lewis remained on as an ADA, working for the acting DA, later elected in a special election, Frank Sale.

Shortly after his funeral, Harvey Dent, now Two-Face, approached Nadine outside her apartment. Instead of assisting one felon, she threw her lot in with two.

Verses:

Dark Knight - This is set at any time during a modified timeline of the events in the movie The Dark Knight.

Shatter - This is set after the events of the Dark Knight verse, where Two-Face has come to Nadine for help. She eventually gives up her work as an ADA to defend the criminals of Gotham and raise a family with Harvey. Entries in this verse may range from the day after the movie's events to twenty years later.

Salvation - Based on the Red Dragon verse of Jonathan Crane, Nadine was never given over to the police at the end of Crane's experiments. Rather, he kept her, shutting her away in his family's home until a chance encounter with none other than Two-Face fifteen years later.
